Whisky is no longer the sole province of Europeans. Japanese whisky has been steadily on the rise since the 1990s. With quality local ingredients, an incredible terroir and distinctively aromatic Mizunara oak barrels, Japanese whisky is now highly regarded and ranked beside the finest of Scotch and Irish whiskies.
We have selected three Japanese whiskies every drinker ought to be familiar with. From the famous Nikka brand, to the legendary Yamazaki Distillery, to the impressive Chichibu Distillery that has garnered a cult-like following- these are whiskies with remarkable stories and character.
These whiskies are all very fragrant, floral, easy to drink and well-balanced. Due to the use of Mizunara oak at certain points, they tend to have complex notes of coconut flakes, sandalwood and what's described as "the smell of a Zen Buddhist Temple".
