A good number of devotees we know regard Auchroisk ("awh-thrusk") Distillery as an unassuming and underrated producer of single malts.
The distillery was built in 1974 to provide Justerini & Brooks a consistent source of malt for the J&B Club Blended Scotch. The distillery is also said to pioneer the "wood finishing" process in the 80's; the technique of transferring whisky from a primary cask to a secondary cask to add an additional layer of flavour. Unlike Balvenie and Glenmorangie, Auchroisk did not court any publicity despite being the earliest to develop this process.
This expression demonstrates the signature heavy texture of Auchroisk coupled with well-balanced notes of tart fruits and spices.
Tasting Notes:
Nose: Sweet malt, lime and nutmeg, followed by some pepper cracked over oak.
Palate: Lime, juicy kiwi and lemon are mixed with nutmeg.
Finish: Medium to long finish of black pepper and nutmeg sprinkled over oranges.
