Oatmeal Stout
I think something rare that anyone would try is having an ice cream float with beer. From what I read, the rules for pairing beer with ice cream is slightly different compared to food pairing. The general rule for picking the right ice cream is to choose a flavour that is as intense or if not synergizes with the beer style.
The oatmeal stout poured visually heavy but had a less viscous mouthfeel than expected. Moderately high carbonated, coffee notes from this beer was quite predominant.
I previously saw that Brewerkz restaurant actually have an oatmeal stout icecream float (with vanilla) which kind of prompted me to try this at home.
I used macadamia nut crisp white chocolate ice cream which I had available in my freezer but I think the ice cream flavour was so light and neutral that the stout easily over powered the white chocolate flavours. The other thing I noticed is that the addition of ice cream seems to release alot of the carbonation, the alcohol whiff from the beer was also more noticeable and because I wanted to get to the ice cream which was at the bottom, I finished the stout faster than usual π
. All in all, I wished I had some dark chocolate or coffee ice cream instead which might be a better ice cream to pair with as an ice cream float. π
