Cristalino Mezcal Contraluz Goes To The US

What you need to know:

  • Casa Lumbre is now expanding their distribution of their Cristalino Mezcal - Contraluz, which is also claimed by Casa Lumbre to be the world's first Cristalino Mezcal.

  • The Mezcal's production uniquely incorporates the Cristalino filtration process before bottling. The brand also confirms that no flavoring has been added to the final product.

  • Casa Lumbre says that the clear Mezcal shows "primary flavours of green agave, citrus and light smoke [that] are complemented by further notes of vanilla, cedar, honey and dried fruit. Its finish is sweet and long-lasting, balanced by the taste of cooked agave, clove and cacao."

  • It is priced at $60 USD RRP and will see a broader international expansion in 2023.

When it comes to Tequila, an unmistakable trend lies in Cristalino, for connoisseurs, it's simply what separates the best from the rest.

In short, Cristalino is Tequila that involves an added step of using activated-charcoal filtration to remove not just the color of aged spirit, but also helps to mellow and lighten out the "woodiness" that comes with aging - leaving an agave spirit that is cleaner, smoother, fruitier and more floral with less oaky influence; it's all the benefits of aging in wooden barrels with none of the drawbacks, or so is claimed.

Casa Lumbre, the company whose portfolio boasts the Abasolo Mexican corn whiskey, Montelobos Mezcal, Ojo de Tigre Mezcal and more, some of which recently won investments from drinks giant Pernod Ricard, is now expanding their distribution of their Cristalino Mezcal - Contraluz, which is also claimed by Casa Lumbre to be the world's first Cristalino Mezcal.

Recall that Tequila falls within a subset of the broader category of Mezcal, where Tequilas are more specific in terms of where they are made, the specific variety of agave used, as well as some differences in the distillation technique used. In simple, all Tequilas are Mezcals, but not all Mezcals are Tequilas.

Before, Contraluz was primarily distributed in Mexico and select states in the US, but Casa Lumbre is now expanding access to the Cristalino Mezcal.

The mezcal is produced from the Espadin variety of agave, which is cooked in underground stone ovens and subsequently shredded and fermented for ten days and then distilled in copper pot still and finally aged for six months in charred American whisky oak barrels, and of course incorporating the Cristalino filtration process before bottling. The brand also confirms that no flavoring has been added to the final product.

“As the first cristalino mezcal, we’re proud to introduce a new and different way of experiencing agave-based distillates.”
