Gold Spot Celebrates 135 Years Of Mitchell Family Bonding

What you need to know:

  • To celebrate 135 years of whiskey in the Mitchell family, the limited Gold Spot expression was created. It is (of course) a triple distilled, single pot still Irish whiskey, which was aged for 9 years, combining whiskies matured across Bourbon casks, Sherry butts, Bordeaux wine casks, and Port pipes, at cask strength of 51.4% ABV.

  • The whiskey is already available at spotwhiskey.com and will also be on show at Whiskey Live Dublin as tasting events roar back. It'll be made available to the global market beginning June 14th, with an RRP of 120 EUR.

  • We've really enjoyed the Spot brand whiskies, as we do Jameson and Redbreast while we're talking about the same stable. But all that said, 120 EUR is just a tad over the top despite what seems to be a very well balanced whiskey.

You've probably seen the Spot brand of Irish whiskies, with labels that sometimes looks much more akin to a wine label than that of a whiskey, that comes in a variety of colors - Green, Blue, Yellow, Red (in order of ascending age).

The whiskey was first produced by the Mitchell family back in the 1800s, and is now produced at Ireland's biggest whiskey producer - the Midleton Distillery (which also produces Jameson and Redbreast, which are probably its most internationally recognisable brands), that is in turn owned by Pernod Ricard.

To celebrate 135 years of whiskey in the Mitchell family, the limited Gold Spot expression was created. This is probably the most "balanced" of the Spot whiskies given its components having been aged in a variety of the major cask types used by whisky makers.

Our Take

We've really enjoyed the Spot brand whiskies, as we do Jameson and Redbreast while we're talking about the same stable. The Blue has probably been one of the better taste-for-value expressions, while the Green has more recently been matured in some interesting wine casks.

In general Irish whiskies are having a real moment, and have been quietly but steadfastly climbing in prices. And what's not to love - they're clean, crisp, fruity, very, very drinkable stuff, and no hangovers (because of the triple distillation)!

But all that said, 120 EUR is just a tad over the top despite what seems to be a very well balanced whiskey that we're sure is going to taste complex and smooth given the current core expressions and the breadth of casks used for the Gold Spot.
