Macallan Releases Tree Of Life & Art Is The Flower Inspired By Scottish Artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh

Inspired by Scottish artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh's 1902 stained glass work The Spirit of the Rose, Macallan has released two new expressions, the Macallan The Tree of Life and Macallan Art Is The Flower, as part of its Tree of Life Collection.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh's The Spirit Of The Rose.

The new Macallan The Tree of Life is a 46 Year Old single malt Scotch that's drawn from two Sherry-seasoned casks laid down in 1979, with just 112 Lalique decanters released globally. Macallan says that The Tree of Life represents a key moment of artist Mackintosh's life, wherein the 46 Year Old whisky is a tribute to his retreat to the countryside, having taken a break from architecture at the age of 46 to reconnect with nature, inadvertently producing some of the artist's most renowned artworks.

The Macallan The Tree of Life comes in a Lalique crystal vessel that comes with a crystal rose stopper mirroring The Spirit of the Rose stained glass work, and is held in a sculpture that pays homage to the intricate metalwork known in Mackintosh's architecture.

The 46 Year Old The Tree of Life expression is said to give tropical fruits charred over smouldering peat embers are balanced with complex wood spice, with notes of antique oak characteristic of higher-aged expressions from Macallan and evokes Mackintosh’s unique designs crafted from wood, in Scotland, many years ago. It is bottled at 46.2% ABV.

The second release in the collection, the Macallan Art is the Flower is inspired by Mackintosh's depictions of nature in architecture and art, again paying homage to his stained glass work The Spirit of the Rose. This expression is said to embody Mackintosh's time in Europe, and is said to present naturally developed flavours derived from Sherry-seasoned European oak casks, including notes of raisin and fig, polished oak, cherry, and almonds. The Macallan Art is the Flower is bottled at 50.4% ABV, and will be available from 6th May 2025.

Accompanying the two expressions is a short documentary-style film that celebrates the connection between art and nature.
