Westward's New American Single Malt Series - Elements: High Desert to Klamath Basin
What you need to know:
-
Westward Whiskey, an all-American distillery, has opened up a whole new series called the Elements, which looks to particularly focus on discovering the Oregon provenance.
-
The debut expression is titled "High Desert to Klamath Basin", and will focus on the use of two-row Full Pint spring barley, known for its full flavors, developed at Oregon State University and grown around the Klamath Basin. Barley grown and malted in Madras, a central high desert, will also be used, having been finished in Garryana (a white oak native to Oregon) casks.
-
It will be bottled at 45% ABV and priced at $99.95 USD.
-
American distilleries in the Pacific Northwest have done a pretty good job, especially with the use of Garryana Oregon White Oak, that imparts great deeper, darker flavors to whiskies.
-
Provenance is always a solid concept for any distillery to work off on and delivers real value to fans because it allows drinkers to get a true taste and reflection of the distillery's unique environment. For an entire bottling hailing from Oregon, certainly something worth paying for.

With the Garryana Oregon White Oak casks, it isn't some native oak that is used just because it's local (something we like to call provenance for provenance's sake) - it actually imparts great deeper, darker flavors to whiskies.
This allows their whiskies to take on much more depth and intensity.
With the new Editions series, it's awesome to see the entire bottle hailing from Oregon and looks to be a pretty solid offering.
Kanpai!
