Rum Reviews

Hampden Estate, 8 Year Old, 46% ABV, Jamaica

Tasting some of that great Hampden Estate 8 year old 46% at Straits Clan today! I must admit I did not exactly enjoy the rum when I first tried it almost 9 months ago, but tasting this for the second time, my tastebuds seem to have taken a liking to it!

On the nose, the rum is rich and warm, coffee and chocolates immediately come to mind. Digging deeper, brighter and more lively notes come to fore, pineapples, candied apples and lime!

The palate is just as appealing as the nose. Intense rich sweetness, syrup and caramelised sugar. Interestingly the Jamaican funk didn’t hit as hard as I thought it would, with only slight hint of burnt rubber and petrol, followed by a long, sweet, vegetal finish that was reminiscent of agricole rums, with a dash of spicy peppers!
