Rum Reviews

Uitvlugt ULR 1997 Velier 17 Year Old

Rum drinkers today would know that the Golden Age of @velierspa Demerara rums was a pivotal moment in rum history, where the world was introduced to the many marques produced at the Diamond Distillery in Guyana. But aside from the common distillation marques like the PM or VSG, experimental marques, like this Uitvlugt 1997 ULR, were also brought to the world for the very first time.

Distilled in 1997 from the four-column French Savalle still, the Uitvlugt Light Rum was set into five casks and aged for 17 years in the tropics before being bottled in July 2014 with a total number of 1,404 bottles produced at an abv of 59.7%. This would also have been distilled and aged partly at the Uitvlugt distillery as the distillery was closed only in the year 2000.

The nose presents a rum that is rather soft, delicate, and sweet. There’s an element of freshness about this rum that sets it apart from most other tropically aged demerara rums, which is likely attributed to its experimental “light” character. It is also accompanied by a hint of salted peanuts, those artificial grape flavouring you find in confectionary, and perhaps a slight of acetone.

The palate is just as light and creamy as the nose, so much so that it leans close to a Spanish-style column still rum, although a slight more complex which gives away a certain kind of uniqueness about this rum. There is orange peels, cola, cane sugar, light notes of oak that makes this an all-round easy drinking demerara despite its higher abv. In the finish you find raisins, dried goji berries, caramel and a bit of baking spices to round it all off.

Perhaps this isn’t really my favourite demerara, especially not when its tropically aged as I often like them robust, rich, and with those deep tones of purple fruits. But it doesn’t change the fact that this a very well produced rum, one that showcases the tremendous potential and possibilities that can come out of Diamond Distillery. Thank you again @bob_the_drunker for sharing this dram!
