Chichibu 4 Year Old, 2011-2016, Chichibu Whisky Festival, Braemar barley, Mizunara heads hogshead no. 1431, 31/282, 61% abv.
Bottled for the 2016 Chichibu Whisky Festival. The craze. The myths. The legends. Mizunara on the label too, but heads so I am not sure if there will be a significant Mizunara influence, and for such a short maturation period too.
Nose: a mix of apples and coconuts, curry powder (?), has hints of a grain whisky, quite meaty, like a dinner meal. These savory elements show me evidence of Mizunara... even at about 4 years old, young but some.
Palate: dry, complex, initial palate is honey with nuts, light oats, mid palate gets more sweet, more sharp, lemons, gummy bears, oily, back palate has coconut husk, wood, light peaches. I sort of feel a slight influence from Mizunara, which is so weird because only the barrel heads were Mizunara.
Finish: medium to long, dried peaches, dried apricots.
There was a lot going on for this pour, but I felt it revolved around peaches, coconuts, and gummy candy. Although it was a little unique, it wasn't too special or mind blowing. I think I might be too used to Japanese whisky.
