Hot Buttered Rum

A final post-holiday update on my brown butter washed rum/making the @how2drink version of Hot Buttered Rum:

I served this to around 10 or so different people over the Christmas/New Year season, with drinking preferences that ran the gamut from “strictly craft beer and wine” to occasional cocktail drinkers to fledgling whiskey drinkers to longtime whiskey fans. And this recipe was basically universally beloved. I cannot recommend it enough for your 2022 holiday plans (or just as an indulgent winter warmer over the next few months).

The recipe again:
- 2 parts brown butter washed Jamaican rum
- 4 parts hot water
- 1.5 parts Demerara syrup
- Cinnamon stick
- Star anise

Combine rum, syrup, and hot water in toddy glass, stir. Add cinnamon stick and star anise.

As Greg himself says in the original recipe video, this is an intensely sweet, decadent drink. I wouldn’t approach this from the slant of a picking a cocktail at dinner a la an Old Fashioned, but more as a dessert course unto itself. Even if you don’t go in for rum or this particular kind of cocktail, his video is outstanding for explaining fat washing and how to do it.
