Longmorn 33 Year Old, 1973-2006, Gordon & MacPhail, First fill sherry butt no. 3650, 54.0% abv.
Had this at the 2019 Whiskytalk Fukuoka!!! It was my first whisky festival and I had a blast! I should post all my pours one day, get it out of my way. Did a crazy Japanese tasting where I got to blend a bunch of amazing pours resulting in a more amazing Japanese blend! But back on topic.
Nose: rich sherry, prunes, raisins, dried figs, caramel, distinct... whatever that means.
Palate: initial palate has a light rubbing alcohol flavor, fruits, mid palate has more spice, fruits, that wet old steamed lotus leaves, wood, herbal tea, blue cheese?, back palate also shows more waxiness associated with a heavy sherry as well as those wet old steamed lotus leaves but in a lighter form.
Finish: long, fruit and remnants of lotus leaves, heavy sherry residue.
This was a strong sherried malt, but had that wet old steamed lotus leaves/expired herbal tea flavor I am not a fan of. Even so, it is well done, with such oiliness on the mouthfeel and permeating sherry and fruit. Like a really lesser lesser lesser modern Longrow 18.
