I have always wanted to try old sherried Macallan, and I couldn't resist when the opportunity presented itself, especially when the bottle contains 60s distillate and comes from the legendary Moon Import. This was bottled in 1982 at 14yo and a heady 59% ABV.
Macallan 14 Year Old bottled 1982 Moon Import Half Moon (59%)
Nose: Thai green mango salad, Maraschino cherry liquid, dried tangerine peels, plums, beetroot, sweet nutty pork tenderloin.
Palate: Simultaneously fizzy and viscous! Lemon sherbet, rhubarb syrup, Fernet Branca, a darkly vegetal undercurrent of boiled watercress, sangria with blood oranges.
Finish: Grapefruit clings to the tongue and cheeks and doesn't let go, the Fernet again, blackberries.
Score: 93
This is sherry like one rarely ever experiences. The only thing stopping this from entering the 95 pts plus stratosphere is that slight dark vegetal edge, that isn't perfectly integrated, but that could just as well be a result of storage. The way grapefruit whettingly clings indelibly to the mouth for at least 5 minutes after each sip is unforgettable.
