Whisky Reviews

Royal Brackla, 1998-2014, Connoisseurs Choice, Gordon & MacPhail, 46% abv.

Matured in refill sherry hogsheads and refill bourbon barrels. These GM CCs... not expecting much. Had this in 2019.

Nose: light bodied, a lightly smoked honey, can smell a pretty strong white sugar sweetness, malty, floral, smoked old pineapples, "feels" like chalk, ... but nothing special.

Palate: initial palate is a little bit like syrup... like a majority of diluted scotches, mid palate gets spicey like ground black pepper, and increases in sugary sweetness, light milk chocolate?, an introduction of sourness in terms of green apples, lemons, an interesting collection of fruity elements, back palate has some light smoke, extends on that sweet and sour fruit theme, am I getting some abv burn at 46%? With time it becomes more black peppered malt, like a peppered Cardhu.

Finish: short to medium, initially a little powdery, but then it becomes oily, green apple skins, feels like ground black pepper.

The body of flavors was pretty sweet, a cross between sour fruit elements and sugar syrup. Also a lot of ground black pepper elements here and there. Interestingly, my notes seem to partially match the tasting notes on the back label. Overall not a bad pour.
