Whoop & Holler, 28 years, Orphan Barrel, 42% abv.
Bartender wanted to show me something "oaky". Guess I'm in for a ride. This is the 9th release in the Orphan Barrel series and is publicized as originating from George Dickel distillery with a mash bill of 84% corn, 8% rye, and 8% malted barley as well as utilizing the Lincoln County Process before barreling. Interestingly, this bottle was hyped up quite well to only disappoint most drinkers.
Nose: alot of boiled peanuts, hints of vanilla, I'm getting hints of strip sirloin (plain beef aromas on the frying pan)?! rotten celery, backend of vomit. Not kidding. Or perhaps the proper word is "tropical"? Not sure, but that vomit-like chemical is there.
Palate: ewww....wtf?!?! I really don't know what to say, but I'll try... cleaning oil on rotten wood, I give up, i have no idea how to describe this. I guess this is what people in the know call oaky.
Finish: short to medium, like acorns and pinenuts on my tongue.
The bartender warned me.... said it was "overoaked"... The nose is interesting, but thats about it. The flavors made me do a weird face on each tasting. Now I know what real "overoaked" is. Some of these collectors don't know what they're doing and are reinforced by misleading tasters (imho). Even though Diageo did a perjurious (is that even a word?!) marketing campaign, it's not hard to see through it... unless you smoke a lot and vomitted too much in your life, then I can see how it works.
