Coca-Colonialism⁣

2oz @bacardi 8 Anos⁣

1/4 oz vanilla coke syrup⁣

1 bar spoon @licor43global

1 dash angostura bitters⁣

1 dash cherry bitters⁣

Stir and strain over rocks into absinthe rinsed glass. Express lemon twist and discard. Garnish with brandied cherries (or coke bottle candies if you have em)⁣

I feel a bit hypocritical because coke is one of the worst polluters on the planet and a few posts ago I was talking about being sustainable with bartending. I take a small comfort in giving this drink an insulting name. ⁣

Months ago I posted a cubata sour using coke syrup. This is a really similar re-imagining of a Cuba libre/rum and coke. Bacardi 8 is one of the nicer Bacardi products out there, but this drink will work with any Cuban style aged rum so use something you like. I usually roll with Havana club 7 but Bacardi 8 was on sale today. ⁣

The syrup is a 1/6 reduction of vanilla coke. Between that and liqor 43 there's a lot of vanilla going on here. The angostura bitters works well with that and the absinthe adds a subtle medicinal note. ⁣

While this looks similar to a rum old fashioned, it's actually closer to an improved whiskey cocktail. The improved whiskey cocktail was one of the earliest variations on an old fashioned, using maraschino liqueur in addition to or as a substitution for syrup. The improved whiskey cocktail also called for absinthe and peychauds bitters. I've kept the absinthe, lost the peychauds, and swapped maraschino for liqor43.

This drink is an idea thats hardly original but it is really good. It's something that reminds you of those days in high school when you'd mix your mom's Bacardi Blanco with a bottle of coke from the corner store and head out to the movies with your friends. Only it doesn't suck.
