A CRYPTIC ALBUM AND AN EASY TO UNDERSTAND BEER
The next pick is the critically acclaimed second album from @radiohead, the brilliant and sonically layered “The Bends”. The album, released in March 1995; moved away from the grunge style of “Pablo Honey”.
The band chose a very different sound, greater use of keyboards, and more abrasive guitar tracks. This new sound would then go into the influence all their other releases. This album took the band from an indie one hit wonder into one of the most recognisable British rock bands.
The album also has one of the best songs to come from the 90’s; the amazing “Fake Plastic Trees”. This song came about from a melody Tom Yorke didn’t know what to do with, with Yorke describing the song as "the product of a joke that wasn't really a joke, a very lonely, drunken evening and, well, a breakdown of sorts”. The song is regarded as one of the best songs ever written, which on the surface talked about a hankering for a real relationship in a world that was becoming increasingly materialistic. The idea was to fake it till one made it or till it drained them out.
The cover art is comes from footage of a CPR mannequin, which Stanley Donwood described as having "a facial expression like that of an android discovering for the first time the sensations of ecstasy and agony, simultaneously". To create the cover image, the pair displayed the footage on a television set and photographed the screen.
Now for the beer, and this cryptic album needs a brew that is easy to understand. Cavalier Brewing have delivered the perfect antidote for this cryptic album; with their brilliantly tasty Brown Ale. This brown ale is really good for a cold day session, and is loaded with chocolate, coffee, roasted flavours and aromas. The caramel and toffee burst up front is really good and the dry, crisp and roasty taste at the end is really good too.
