IPA LIKE YOU MEAN IT
The next pick is the new wave and post-punk influenced debut album “Hot Fuss” from The Killers. The band recorded a number of tracks as demos, which all basically got thrown out, except for “Mr Brightside”. The demos got thrown out after hearing The Strokes album “This Is It”. In 2012, Brandon Flowers told NME that he felt "depressed" after hearing the Strokes' album Is This It. "That record just sounded so perfect", he said. "We threw away everything [we were working on] and the only song that made the cut and remained was 'Mr. Brightside.'
“Mr Brightside” was some that came from somewhere personal, as Brandon Flowers wrote the song after his ex-girlfriend cheated on him. “All the emotions in the song are real,” he told NME shortly after Hot Fuss’ release. “When I was writing the lyrics, my wounds from it were still fresh. I am Mr Brightside! But I think that’s the reason the song has persisted – because it’s real.”
The album cover was photographed by Matthias Clamer in 2000, in the southern region of the suburbs of Beijing, China. The characters on top of each building ("建", "材", "开", and "发") translate to "construction material development". The album has brooding New Order-esque inspirations, sweeping, choir-assisted ballads and is definitely “Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll”
This album was a massive success, selling over 7 million copies, hitting number 1 in five countries and spawning four commercially and critically successful singles: "Mr. Brightside", "Somebody Told Me", "All These Things That I've Done" and "Smile Like You Mean It".
Now for the beer, and the album just has to have the Vienneipa Fancy Ice Cream Cake IPA from Dainton Brewery. This beer is really creamy sweet little number, a beautifully tasty Milkshake IPA which all Killers and no filler. 😊
