TELL ME WHERE DID DRINK BROWN ALE LAST NIGHT?
The next pick is the best of the MTV Unplugged series, the night that Nirvana hit the stage and the airwaves on November 18th 1993. With most MTV Unplugged sets, there was a lot of influence and expectation from MTV as to which songs would be played. Not so with Nirvana, who created a setlist that they would not concede or explain its makeup; with six covers and “Come As You Are” being the only hit song played. Adding “Come As You Are” to the set list was a contentious point; with Kurt Cobain threatening to cancel the performance a day before it taped.
The band wanted to do something different to all other Unplugged sets. According to drummer Dave Grohl, "We'd seen the other Unplugged’s and didn't like many of them, because most bands would treat them like rock shows—play their hits like it was Madison Square Garden, except with acoustic guitars."
The Unplugged was absolutely memorable and truly mesmerising experience. The hush over the crowd in that room really gave the impression that the audience was witnessing something truly memorable. The choice of songs was perfect; with the cover of the David Bowie classic “The Man Who Sold The World” an inspired choice.
Now for the beer, and the brew really had to be a familiar style, with a different take. Now we’ve had our far share of Brown Ales before, but the Lamington Brown Ale from Deeds Brewing really stacks up well against this album; creating the perfect pairing.
Adding Coconut to this Brown Ale gives something new and really tasty. The Warrior hop used in this beer isn’t one we’ve come across a lot; but is really good. The brew is an excellent Dark, Sweet brew with really good Chocolate and Coconut Flavours. This beer starting out as something else before being made better by a change really matches up with the Nirvana MTV Unplugged set; with both the album and the beer not just being the standard that has been done before.
