Holgate Hazy IPA x Live – Throwing Copper

A FAVOURITE 90’S ALBUM AND A FAVOURITE BREWERY WHO GOT STARTED IN THE 90’S

The next pick is a hugely popular album one of the biggest bands of the 90’s; who remained popular well after the 90’s, and a brewery who started out in 1999 making tasty brews, which have been and still are some of our favourites.

The album is the 2nd album from Live, and is the brilliant “Throwing Copper”. The brilliance starts with the cover art, is a painting by Scottish artist Peter Howson titled Sisters of Mercy. The painting explores the themes of betrayal, revenge, and fear and that it shows a group of prostitutes urging a man holding a Bible to throw himself off a cliff.

The album was a huge success, and delivered both well known and less well known amazing tracks. For us, this album is one of the albums in the world that is one with no weak songs; and is one that is absolutely brilliant played in full. We can say this because we had an amazing night seeing Ed Kowalcyk play this full in 2012.

When this album came along, grunge was still at the top of its game; but the album and the band not really fitting any of the music scene of the time, made the album and the band really stand out. The album topped the charts in 4 countries, sold over 8 million copies and 4 tracks made the @triple_j #hottest100 countdowns of 1994 and 1995.

Now for the beer, and “because everybody’s good enough for some change”, the brew had to come from a brewery that started out in 1999, making it one of the first craft breweries in Australia. The brewery is still in Woodend, Victoria;  although it’s a lot larger than it has ever been. The brewery is Holgate Brewery, and the brew is the amazingly tasty Hazy IPA.

The brew is really easy on the taste buds, much like the album is really easy on the ears. The beer came in at a surprisingly hefty 6.8% ABV; with the huge amounts of Amarillo, Azacca and Mosaic hops give the brew fruity flavours; and the lower amount of bitterness really lets the mango nectar, orange and peach flavours show through really well.
