DANGEROUS LIASONS, 90’S TEEN EMOTIONS AND PERFECT BREWS
 
The next is the album that contains the opening track from the 1999 Movie “Cruel Intentions” (an adaptation of the novel Les Liaisons dangereuses), the second studio album from British rockers @placeboworld, the amazing “Without You I’m Nothing”; an album that became a defining moment for the band; and created a brilliant moment in alternative music culture.
 
Not feeling where they fitted into the music scene, the band created their own place. Placebo Guitarist Stefan Olsdal said that “We weren't a British band, we weren't the straight lads from the pub, we were the cross-dressing weirdos who were playing this kind of romantic punk.” Combining this with bad days that were had after their initial success, and a basement studio, the tracks for “Without You I’m Nothing” became a much more introspective album; with the band delving into deeper and darker recesses of human emotions.
 
Olsdal has been quoted as saying that many of the album’s themes of depression and gender fluidity have given it a newfound relevance 20 years after the album was released. The introspective songwriting, dealing with loneliness, despair, frustration and questioning everything; as well Brian Molko’s brilliant vocals and the perfect musicianship makes for a great combination. The title track of the album also features David Bowie.
 
The album sold over 1 million copies, and three tracks from the album made the @triple_j #hottest100; including Every You, Every Me; which made #5 on the 1999 countdown.
 
Now for the beer, and the selection for this album is “The Damned Pilsner” from @hopnationbeer. The classic Pilsner has been elevated with a nice hoppy little twist and plenty of citrus flavours to go around. The use of Riwaka and Motueka hops is really clever, and really does create a “sound” of it’s own just like Placebo and this album did.
