For our 100th Album + Beer pairing post we thank @summerdelight21 for the suggestion of Pearl Jam Ten.
They dropped this album in 1991, that's right, before Nirvana's Nevermind, Dark Seattle Grunge. Pearl Jam's original name was taken from the professional basketball player Mookie Blaylock. In commemoration of the band's original name, the band titled its first album Ten after Blaylock's jersey number.
Many of the songs on Ten were instrumental jams or reworked Mother Love Bone songs for which Vedder composed new melodies and lyrics.
They got creative in the recording studio and even used sound effects from a pepper shaker and drumsticks tapping a fire extinguisher on the track Oceans. "While I’m waiting for the band, in between, waiting and waiting I used to look at that stuff and go, ‘It would be fun to climb that curtain do a little monkey bars and then flip into the crowd..When Vedder found himself on the stage with Pearl Jam, he couldn’t resist living out the fantasy.
"That was the whole idea of it. I think so much of our music or our songs is like let’s live in the moment.” - Vedder
Shapeshifter Nordic Hazy IPA beer pairing. This beer was fermented with kveik, an exciting strain of yeast from Norway that bucks all the conventional brewing trends.
Used for generations by Norwegian farmhouse brewers, it ferments extremely quickly and thrives in conditions where traditional yeast does not. It can produce amazing fruity esters when underpitched, perfect for hazy IPA’s.
This strain is a blend of three different kveik yeasts and is double dry hopped with Citra and Galaxy for maximum juiciness.
