Sobah Beverages Pepperberry IPA x A.B. Original, Thelma Plum - I C U

I C U BRINGING SOBAH AND POWERFUL HIP HOP

The first pick in National Reconciliation Week and Indigenous Artist special is from the duo Briggs and Trials, best known as the Hip Hop duo @a.b.original. Both members are Indigenous Australians; Briggs is a Yorta Yorta man and Trials is a Ngarrindjeri man. Trials is also well known as an ARIA-winning producer for Drapht, Seth Sentry, Illy and Hilltop Hoods.

The album packs a punch of blistering beats and songs with a really strong message. Reclaim Australia is immediately reminiscent of N.W.A in its unapologetic approach to the injustices still faced by Aboriginal Australians. The introduction of the album comes from Archie Roach, who remembers protesting for land rights in the ‘70s.

The album was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2017 @ariaofficial awards, and won Best Urban Album and Best Independent release.

The album is very powerful, with messages in injustice very strong and there are no apologies from the artists about the issues it discusses. The topics and the song writing really do have an @rageagainstthemachine feel about them. There’s a deep pain and anguish that underlies Reclaim Australia’s ferocity. Briggs and Trials demand that we sit up, take notice and take action.

Now for the beer, and a powerful album from brilliant Indigenous artists needs a brilliant beer from an excellent Indigenous Brewing. Sobah Beverages have taken all the great flavours of an IPA, given it an extra ‘hot and spicy’ kick from the infusion of the fruit of the Australian Native Pepperberry tree, a plant naturally occurring in the cold high country of Southern NSW, Victoria and Tasmania. The brewery is run by husband-wife team Clinton and Lozen Schultz. Clinton, a Gamilaroi man and psychologist, has created a brewery that takes lessons from elders he has come into contact from around Australia.
