The next pick in National Reconciliation Week and Indigenous Artist special from the very talented Alice Skye, who have delivered the raw, stripped back and beautiful debut album “Friends with Feelings”.
Alice, who is a Wergaia woman from in the Mallee and Wimmera regions of north-Western Victoria; has delivered an album that has been described as raw and beautiful, delicate in the delivery and evocative in the lyrical imagery. Alice explains that ‘Friends with Feelings’ is a collection of songs taken from journal entries she has written over the years. “There are different landscapes and times in my life that these songs are a product of,” she said.
“The title track was written after being told by someone to think of my emotions as colours. I’m deeply preoccupied with identity, it’s something that gives me stability – understanding my culture and who I am. This whole album for me is a reminder of where I was, where I’ve been and where I’m still going.”
Alice grew up aside the sandstone mountains and wildflowers of the Grampians; and growing up in this area has inspired her song writing with a sensitivity and maturity well beyond her years. There are songs that are brilliant moments between her and the listener, to warm folk songs.
Now for the beer, and this smooth moving and evocative album goes perfectly with the Sobah #1 Lemon Aspen Pilsner. A light, fruity beer from the grapefruit and lychee flavour notes of the native fruit infused within it. The lemon aspen, naturally occurring in Far North QLD throughout the Kuku Yalanji Language Nations lands, is rich in antioxidants and Vitamins A & C. Based on a Czech pale ale, this brew is fresh and citrusy with a distinct hop aroma and flavour.
