South West Sour, Colonial Brewing, 4.6% ABV

South West Sour

I think this might be the first time that I'm trying a sour beer style (apart from gose). Just from the name alone I was expecting perhaps something like a wheat beer but it was definitely more than that.

Typical of this beer style is that the brewery would use wild yeast (naturally occurring yeast) and/or bacteria which contributes to the tartness in the taste.

Colonial used natural acidifying bacteria in this case.

Poured with a straw hazy body, what came as a surprised to me was the tropical aroma (as I wasn't expecting that) and reminded me of an IPA. The immediate difference with an IPA is the taste. It was true and in fact sour with none of the bitterness from the hops.

As the malts used was meant to give it a light body, the sour taste was quite dominant, so much so that it's hard to tell that this is a beer.

But.... I think having something savoury would bring a nice contrast pairing. I had this with some salted dry roasted edamame and the beans turned out sweeter. Could also imagine this with sweet desserts! 🍻

This new beer experience was not possible without @nixxynixxynixxy sponsorship. 🙆
