Sunbird “City Of Gold” Hazy Copper India Pale Lager, 5% ABV

This is probably my favourite from Sunbird so far. The multiple-award-winning City Of Gold is described as a lager for juicy IPA lovers, and a "Hazy Copper India Pale Lager" that is apparently a bridge across 3 styles of beer - copper ales, IPAs and lagers.

Sunbird's friendly founder Clive Tan recommended this brew when I asked for something bold and rich from his lineup.

Let's give this a taste!

Sunbird “City Of Gold” Hazy Copper India Pale Lager, 5% ABV - Review

Appearance: Hazy, dull coppery amber with a frothy, off-white head.

Nose: Delightfully sweet and aromatic, boasting a rich maltiness that intermingles with an enticing blend of mango, apricot, and a subtle whisper of hoppy undertones - there is barely any bitterness. Opens up to layers of toasty graham crackers and candied orange peel that add complexity and depth to the aroma.

In the mouth: A symphony of jammy stone fruits and maltiness unfolds. Once again: apricots, caramel, honey, toasted graham crackers, and cereal, creating a luscious, rich brew. The absence of overpowering bitterness allows the vibrant fruit flavours to shine, while a clean profile keeps the taste focused. Citrus and grapefruit notes make a welcome appearance toward the end, adding a refreshing counterpoint.

Finish: The finish is lingering and satisfying, leaving behind a malt sweetness, and a tantalising dried apricot note. A faint trace of roasted nuts and toffee makes this really moreish.

My Thoughts

🎭

An artful fusion of various styles that makes for a very indulgent brew. Sunbird Brewing's "City Of Gold" Hazy Copper India Pale Lager is a captivating fusion of the copper ale, IPA, and lager styles, presenting a veritable fruit tart in a can.

This reminds me of a fruitier version of a wheat beer. The notes are moreish and decadent with jammy stone fruits and toasty, biscuity malt. Even then, bitter hoppiness is kept to a minimum, which would make this really appeal to Erdinger-loving Asians.

I'd be more than happy to substitute my desserts in a three-course meal with this beer.
