Wax On and Wax Off

I haven't had alot of experience trying out barrel aged beers but it's definitely on my bucket list along with vertical tasting beers (which I'm hoping to invest in a dedicated fridge in the future once the baby milk fridges are cleared in the house 😊).

I almost.... Didn't get to try this.... Firstly it's quite hard to find but I managed to get it fromΒ @beerforce.sgΒ and secondly these comes only in 640ml bottles and I tend not to drink that much in one setting. Fortunately just before we had the restriction of 2 visitors per day, I managed to organize a gathering with enough people to drink both the barrel aged and non barrel aged one in one setting!

Firstly let's talk about Wax Off, it's a Belgian Tripel and excuse me again for being a greenhorn to this beer style but if this is how most tripel tastes like, I would say I absolutely love it! Wax off is the beer base without the barrel aging. It smelled of fruits but in a mild manner not in your face like an IPA. The mouth feel was smooth and the alcohol content was easily perceived as high.

On to Wax On, this is the one that is barrel aged and has a wax cap. Again, excuse me for being naive but I had no idea how to get rid of the wax! Tried cutting using a butter knife and finally managed to cut through after a while before pulling the wax apart. In retrospect, I should have been more prepared (could have watched some YouTube videos first) or maybe consider including some instructions in the future? πŸ˜„. From what I read, a wax seal is meant to increase the seal of the bottle cap and prevent oxidation of the beer. To me, it adds a nice aesthetic and classy feel to the beer bottle.

Wax On was aged in a whiskey barrel for about a month and to me, having both before and after in one setting, there wasn't a very distinctive difference. The aromatics were similar but the taste had a spicy note, the body is darker and the perceived alcohol is also stronger although the Abv is the same. 😊
