Westside Ale Works 4th Anniversary IPA x Foo Fighters - The Colour And The Shape

The next pick comes from a huge band in today’s rock music world, and was an album made with a full band; following from the debut made by Dave Grohl and producer Barrett Jones. The album is “The Colour And The Shape” from the @foofighters.

The album was mostly inspired by Grohl’s divorce from photographer Jennifer Youngblood in 1996, the album was designed to resemble a therapy session, with the album flipping between upbeat and ballads to convey the conflicting emotions. The early recording session with the full formed band of guitarist Pat Smear, bassist Nate Mendel, and drummer William Goldsmith didn’t go very well and the band discarded most of the recording. The band got back together without Goldsmith in early 1997 to record at Hollywood's Grandmaster Recordings studio, with Grohl playing drums on these sessions. Goldsmith being left out didn’t go down well, and he left the band soon after.

The album was a huge success, but this success came at a price. In the liner notes for the 10th anniversary reissue, Nate Mendel mentioned that “two marriages fell apart, we lost a drummer, someone nearly went to jail, and we discovered late in the day that record making is hellishly expensive and best done with a budget prepared beforehand.” A title track was written and recorded for The Colour and the Shape during the Bear Creek sessions, but like most of the other songs attempted there, it did not reach the album's final track list.

In order to create a slick album with a touch of the Pixies, the band hired producer Gil Norton; who has worked with massive bands such as Pixies, Jimmy Eat World and Patti Smith. The album made the Top 10 in 10 countries and sold over 4 million copies.

Now for the beer, and the brew is the really tasty “4th Anniversary IPA” from @westsidealeworks.  There are Seven different hops, and those hops are really well balanced; making for a really tasty little brew that matches this album perfectly. This brew will sneak up you at 6.8% ABV, but it’s a brilliant brew.
