Wolf Of The Willows Johnny Smoke Porter x Eskimo Joe - Foreign Land

The next album pick is one of the most fantastic Australian albums released this century, the 2009 Eskimo Joe album “Inshalla”.

In an interview with Australian radio station @triple_j, lead singer Kav Temperley explained his choice of an Arabic word for the album title. It basically translates to 'what will be will be' but the literal translation is 'God willing'. It's a really beautiful Arabic word and it basically means a resignation to fate, like you're kind of letting the chips lie where they will. The people in the Arabic world use it all the time, they use it for like, 'who knows?'

“Inshalla” explores a very different sound for Eskimo Joe. The band have mentioned that they were at a stage where they wanted to do something different musically and also in their personal lives. This album also includes the beautifully powerful and yet in some ways, quite sad track ”Foreign Land”. The song contains a sample of traditional Turkish folk music and was written as a tribute to the late Heath Ledger.

The track was written after an emotional Temperley was walking the streets of New York City after hearing of Ledger’s passing. Temperley has been quoted as saying about this day; “It had just started snowing. It was a magical moment. That night we had to do this Australia gig, and when we got to it we found out that Heath Ledger had died. He'd died two blocks from where I was walking and at the time I was walking and it started snowing. He was from Perth and we were in New York City, this big foreign city, and I felt this immense loneliness of this kid from my hometown dying by himself there.”

Now the beer needs to be a powerful, deep brew to go with this album. Our friends from Wolf of The Willows have come up with a great match for this, with their brilliant brew “Johnny Smoke Porter”. The deep colour when poured, the use of smoked Rauch, Munich, chocolate, brown and black malts gives this beer a really tasty malt base that is smoky and sweet. The East Kent Goldings and Willamette hops give the brew a nice bitterness and an earthy flavour. This brew has brilliant layers of espresso, smoke and dark chocolate and is an excellent malty and smooth beer.
