Dormoy hors d’âge

Here is an old Hors d'Âge agricultural rum, aged in oak barrels for the Dormoy company in Petit Bourg, and distributed in mainland France by Ets Gouin (Paris 12). The back of the label tells us briefly about the rum in 3 languages ​​(French, English and German).

Price : no idea… I found it in a small shop thanks to an internet user for around 100 euros. 70cl bottle and 45° on the meter.

Age : between 8 and 12 years as indicated by the term 'hors d'âge' on the bottle, or even beyond?

No additional information on the web concerning this rum, but according to the investigation carried out by Emmanuelle Parent (from the La Favorite distillery) this rum would come from La Favorite which at the time sold rum to the cousins ​​G& P Dormoy of Petit Bourg: white for their punches and certainly old for certain rare occasions. It is therefore very likely that this rum was distilled and aged at the La Favorite distillery then marketed by G&P Dormoy… It would date from the 80s. And for the record, the company G&P (Geneviève & Pierre) Dormoy was created in 1974 by Pierre Dormoy who wanted to exploit artisanally then industrially a traditional recipe of coconut punch (based on natural coconut milk), in addition to syrups, jams, and much later an AOC agricultural rum under the Courville brand.

This rum has a beautiful amber color with coppery highlights, classy ; rather oily in appearance, the tears which line the wall of the glass seem to weave a veined and swollen network, then fall back down at a beautiful pace towards the bottom.

The first nose is gourmand and fruity, full of the smell of exotic fruits that have reached perfect ripeness (mango, papaya), full of sugars and ready to yield to the slightest pressure. The fruitiness gradually becomes candied, goes towards black fruit (prune, grape), almost roasted and vanilla. It inevitably recalls the hors d'âge of La Favorite, concentrated, imposing and conquering.

It is exquisite, round and beautiful, we are first charmed by the roundness of its exotic palette, its sunny and assumed maturity, then the candied fruits transport us to warmer and more humid regions, with a woody and melted spices (licorice).

The attack is smooth and concentrated, on the candied fruit still black, the liquorice and the spices (white pepper) for a magnificent mouth that alternates the flavors but remains focused on these candied fruits, black, superb and which develops magnificently well, in an exemplary balance and complexity. Everything is melted and forms only one, but each flavor finds the way to stand out, in turn, then goes back into the background to make way for the others.

The finish is superb, long and exuberant; we find all the flavors, beautifully warmed by the spices and the liquorice for a very good tasting moment. It lasts a long time and it is frankly good, with a return of candied fruits at the end which leaves you with a very pleasant taste - and for a long time - in your mouth.

The similarities with the hors d'âge of La Favorite are obvious. And the 45° serves it wonderfully well from start to finish, and especially with an excessively long and tasty finale (which is sorely lacking in the hors d'âge of La Favorite). A very nice discovery, this Dormoy rum. Rating: 87
