Taste Testing The Zacapa 23 Solera

Don't trust the number on the bottle, as with most rums called 'Solera' this is the age of the oldest rum used in the blend; there is indeed 23 year old rum in your bottle, but let's say that in quantity we are closer to half a teaspoon than a quarter or a third of the 70cl. But this does not detract from the quality of the finished product, let's be clear.

So here we have a rum from a unique blend of rums from 6 to 23 years old. Atypically, Zacapa rum is aged at an altitude of 2,300 meters, above the clouds of Guatemala. Up there, the rum is aged using the 'Solera' method, a sort of continuous blend (we will come back to this in an article). 3 types of barrels are used for this rum: barrels previously used to make whiskey (bourbon), and white wines (Sherries and Pedro Ximenez).

In the glass we discover a dark mahogany color with a coppery, almost red reflection ; the liquid falls slowly and delicately on the walls of the glass.

The nose is quite fine and subtle , honeyed with sweet scents of cocoa, caramel, vanilla and cinnamon; floral and light.

In the mouth it is just as sweet/sweet, syrupy/oily. The entry in the mouth is floral, vanilla, with a nice caramelized note; the extension on the palate brings out a scent of cinnamon and woody notes (oak), almost smoky. It is a rather well-balanced rum.

No aggressive attack on the finish , which is quite long and oily with a hint of bitterness at the end.

This is a 'firendly' rum, to introduce to your friends, with the risk that the bottle will go; nothing dazzling in this Zacapa, everything is simple and accessible. Its sweetness and viscosity are on the edge of liqueur and could destabilize more than one rum lover. Also try on ice or with a dash of water to go further in the tasting.

AND YOU? 🙂
