Monica Berg and Alex Kratena Combine Perfume and Cocktails With Launch of New Bar Kyara

Monica Berg and Alex Kratena, co-founders of Tayēr + Elementary, are set to launch Kyara in Barcelona later this month (May 29).

Based in the SLS Barcelona hotel in the Port Fòrum neighbourhood, the hotel bar will ‘explore a dystopian post-modern cocktail world, where iconic classics are interpreted through a lens of unconventional ingredients’.

The bar’s name hails from an ancient Japanese word referencing the highest grade of aromatic aloeswood (also known as oud), a nod to its concept of marrying cocktails and fragrances, with a philosophy of ‘translating perfume accords, complexity and depth into every drink’.

The bar will feature a dedicated Compounding Room, which is essentially a library of distillates and extracts that echoes Tayēr's experimental spirit. Guests can also look forward to a unique "bespoke Martini diagnosis," which is said to be a multi-sensory experience guided by expert mixologists.

The Compounding room: A fragrance and distillate library within a bar.

The menu is divided into seven sections: Fruits, Citrus, Florals, Amber, Chypre, Leather, and Woods. Described as ‘cocktail accords’,  the team defines each as ‘the blending of different raw materials to create a distinctive new composition’.

Designed by AvroKO's London studio, the 90-seat space is an intriguing blend of "villain's lair meets multi-sensory laboratory." Its decor marries Scandinavian functionality with Japanese minimalism, featuring low ceilings that create a cocoon-like atmosphere. Amber glass portals punctuate cool, earth-toned textured concrete walls and ceiling.

Complementing this unique aesthetic, the soundscape dynamically fuses hip hop, trap, and drill with elements of garage, afro trap, and drum and bass.

To celebrate the launch, the Kyara team has also collaborated with multi-disciplinary designer and artist Yomagick to create a series of AI artworks which explores the concept of ‘art in ingredients’ and was inspired by the seven ‘accords’ on the menu.
