The Curious Drinker’s Review Of The Spirits Magazine Of The Summer

31 Incredible Stories From Around The World Right In Your Hands, Written By Us

Summer's here and there ain't a better time - Sun's out, gun's out, and we're all headed out again (finally!).

Don't we all miss getting back out on the beaches, hanging out with friends and family on a night out at our old haunts, the crisp, slightly metallic smell of boarding a plane, jetsetting to anywhere other than here - ah that feeling of knowing you're about to have a good time wherever you might be, wherever you might be headed to.

I'm here to tell you about the perfect companion to all of this summer's activities - Joy Luck Press's Summer Edition.

Now, hear me out. This edition, we've got everything you loved about the inaugural issue - great indepth features, commentary on the topics at the top of your mind, packed with fun reviews and exciting escapades on night out with us.

Look, it's gonna be fun, interesting, informed, and most importantly, easy to read. It's a real page turner (or so we've heard from our wonderful fans) and you're going to be craving for the next edition before you know it. It's that fun.

So what we'll do is walk you through what you're going to find in the Summer Edition of the Joy Luck Press.

News and New Releases

Everyone is keeping an eye out for young Japanese craft upstart Shizuoka Distillery, but did you know they're about to put out their first ever 100% local barley original bottling?

And who isn't into the hit TV-series Peaky Blinders, well they've got a dram or two to pick with you. This edition also covers Talisker's oldest release (matured in a Kelp cask!), Breaking Bad's very own Mezcal, and only the second release from Korea's first whisky distillery.

Big Reads

We love diving right into some big reads, especially when they're all about what's the hottest topic right now. And who could miss the NFTs coming into the whisky space? But, wait, we've gathered some level-headed experts to actually break down what it's all about and whether you should be getting your hands on it.

Did you know Japan played a pretty big role in saving America's Bourbon? Kids in the 70s weren't exactly into being old-fashioned like their parents and would not be caught dead sipping on some Bourbon, not especially if they had "Old" in their name, duh! Ironically, Japan's burgeoning drinkers were quite the opposite, giving Bourbon makers a second wind.

Interviews

Don't we love hearing the best insider tips, what trends to look out for, and just basking in the passion of those deep in the whisky community. And this edition we're headed to Japan! We go deep with Aloha Whisky Bar's David Tsujimoto on what inspires him, which Japanese whisky he thinks is like a Justin Bieber song and clues us in on which distilleries to look out for.

Then we get up close to Whisuki's Jimmy and Fiesta, who shares with us on how to have a healthy work life balance, unlocking great bar experiences and what inspires them!

Distillery Dive

Next, we head into the jungles of Singapore to take you on a tour of one of Singapore's few distilleries - the Tanglin Gin Distillery! Find out how they make some incredible internationally award winning gins and how Singapore and Southeast Asia inspires them to create unique flavors that pairs just as well with the local cuisine.

Then we hop over to the Dornoch Castle in Scotland, to find out what's up with the fast rising Thompson Bros who have taken over the whisky (and rum and gin) world by storm with their fantastical labels (can anyone say alien Jeff Goldblum) and impeccable selections as one of the best new indie bottlers, and the start of their own distilling journey as they begin to put out their own juice.

Escapades

Head on a night out with us as we hit the town, starting with the new Club Street Wine Room, with amazing dishes that'll make your mouth water. What's the best thing to do after dinner? Nightcap! We're headed to the Origin Bar housed in Singapore's renowned Shangri-La Hotel for some rums and chocolate, and absolutely amazing hospitality.

Lastly, we go nibbling on some bean-to-bar artisanal craft chocolates with Fossa Chocolate! We clue you in on some of their unique flavors and give them all a good ol' fashioned taste test!

Reviews

You can't possibly have a drinks or spirits magazine without getting into some reviews, obviously! This edition will cover reviews of the latest Hampden Pagos from Italian mega-bottler Velier, we revisit where it all started with the Rhum Damoiseau, and head over to Japan to give their rums a taste, trying out a couple of Nine Leaves rum.

We're big on Japan this edition and it's only fair we give their produce a fair shake - a pair of Akashi from Stefan van Eycken's Ghost Series indie bottlings, Nikka's Grande Global Travel Retail release, and compare it to Nikka's Discovery Series. But Japan's not famous for just their whiskies, and it seemed only natural we try some of their Umeshu and Sakes.

We give Pernod Ricard's recent acquisition, Mexican whisky, Abasolo, a taste test to end off!

Field Report

Competitions are a big part of craft spirits and everyone's eyes are peeled for what bottles or bars to hit up next. We bring you an update from the Tokyo Whisky and Spirits Competition 2022, as well as Asia's Top 50 Bars of the year!

Prints Uncovered

One of the loveliest things about spirits is that it's been around for as long as anyone can remember. With such a rich history, you can bet that some fascinating advertisements abound - each a portal for us to hop into a completely time, and a completely different world, yet all still sipping on the same quality beverages. The fashion styles and the way we live, work and play may change, but somethings don't - we still love a good time. How wonderful!

This edition we take a looking at Makoto Saito's artistic interpretation of Benedictine Liqueur, as well as Campari's 1950's "Dopo La Terra...Gli Astri" ad campaigns.
