Gin Reviews

Tanqueray Blackcurrant Royale Distilled Gin, 41.3% ABV

Today, I've got my hands on another release from Tanqueray, though this time its one from their line of flavoured gins: the Tanqueray Blackcurrant Royale Distilled Gin!

The Blackcurrant Royale is said to be inspired by the creator Charles Tanqueray’s travels to France, and blends the brand’s classic London Dry Gin (distilled with juniper, coriander, angelica and liquorice) with French blackcurrants, vanilla and black orchid.

I've always found it quite peculiar that Tanqueray has never released a sloe gin variation, though from the sounds of it, this Blackcurrant Royale expression might be the release that offers the closest sloe gin-esque flavor profile. Either way, I'm eager to see how the blend of fruity and floral plays out, so let's get to it!

Tanqueray Blackcurrant Royale Distilled Gin - Tasting Notes

Appearance: Violet purple

Aroma: Delightfully fruity aromas of blackcurrants and stewed berries, with some light touches of lemon, piney juniper and coriander spice.

Taste: Rich and flavorful, with blackcurrant, cherries and mulberries taking dominance here, joined by a delicious creamy vanilla note that lends subtle sweetness and rounds out the fruitiness with a slight floral undertone. There’s some tart grapefruit and lemon zest lingering in the background, reminding me of lemonade.

Finish: Medium, fading with a delicious aftertaste of panna cotta and blackcurrants.

Overall Thoughts

Delicious and decadent - with a juicy flavor that doesn't get too cloying. The fruity blackcurrant and floral vanilla notes integrate together well, and I also enjoy the subtle hints of the juniper and corainder heat adding some herbaceous spice!

I would mix this with some lemonade or citrus tonic, or use it in Sour cocktail. Adding some citrus will also be a great way to introduce tartness to contrast beautifully with the fruity sweetness in this expression!

With juniper & joy,
