Ardbeg Uigeadail fans, you're going to want to get ready for this.
One of Islay's favourite distilleries, Ardbeg has now released what they've called the "older sibling to Ardbeg Uigeadail" - as if the Uigeadail wasn't already incredibly popular!
The new Ardbeg Seann Chreag 21 Years Old - pronounced Shawn Craig, which is taken to refer to a Scottish ancient rock - the new well-aged expression, bottled at 45.8% ABV and aged in both Oloroso Sherry and Bourbon casks, pays tribute to Beinn Bheigier, a mountainous and rocky summit that looms over wild moors and peat bogs in the south-east of Islay. The rocky hill is said to offer some of the best views of Islay from the peak and have long been a local and tourist favourite.
Ardbeg's new Seann Chreag pays tribute to the rocky hill of Beinn Bheigier.
Now down to the whisky itself, the new Ardbeg Seann Chreag is said to be "supremely layered, combining classic Bourbon-aged Ardbeg with Oloroso Sherry casks for rich and mellow balance" and thus "for a rich balance of smouldering heather, hickory-smoked ham and nut toffee - this whisky is as dark, mysterious and inviting as its namesake's moonlit peak".

Compared to the Ardbeg Uigeadail, the distillery says the Ardbeg Seann Chreag is darker and more complex, with tasting notes including "tarry smoke and peaty potency with rich sweetness of figs in syrup, nut toffee and demerara sugar".
“Aged in sherry and bourbon casks for 21 years, it combines classic notes of hickory-smoked ham, damp peat bog and burning heather with rich, sherried flavours of nut toffee, honey, leather and syrupy figs.”
The new Ardbeg Seann Chreag 21 Year Old is available as a Global Travel Retail exclusive, and will also be available at the distillery's visitor center.
