Australia's Gospel Gives Its First Project Series Launch Of 2023: Legacy Rye

Australia's chief preacher of the greatness of rye, Gospel, is out with their first Project Series limited release of 2023 - the Gospel Project Release Legacy Rye.

The expression is an homage to the early days of the distillery's Brunswick days when Gospel would use milk vats for fermenters and had still directly fired their distillation stills - this is a real nod to the early days of Gospel!

“It gives us the opportunity to produce more experimental limited releases, like the three-grain Legacy Rye, which best showcases our team of talented distillers and is a testament to our fanaticism to create premium yet affordable Australian whisky.”

Andrew Fitzgerald, Gospel's co-founder

The new Legacy Rye expression is made of 59% unmalted Mallee rye from South Australia, 35% Australian corn and 6% Australian malted barley, which was then distilled and aged in a heavy toast and high char cask for three years.

“There is a discussion to be had about the impact of terroir on whiskey production. Still, in my personal experience, and from what I’ve been lucky to see at The Gospel, Australian rye has a very distinctive character,

The grain we use at The Gospel, which all comes from one farmer and is grown in a uniquely Australian climate, allows us to make a uniquely Australian whiskey, not just because it is made in Melbourne but because it has a distinctly Australian flavour.”

It was bottled at 56% ABV, and evokes notes of "fig, lemon curd and chamomile before cascading into toasted cedar, burnt toffee and almond."

A total of 1,001 bottles will be released at AU$145 per bottle.
