Barnbougle Golf Links Celebrates 20 Years with Exclusive Tasmanian Single Malt Whisky
Barnbougle Golf Links, a popular golf resort located on Tasmania’s northeast coast, will commemorate its 20th anniversary with the launch of a limited-edition Barnbougle Anniversary 20-Year-Old Single Malt Whisky, in collaboration with Hellyers Road Distillery.
Carefully matured over two decades, Barnbougle Golf celebrates classic links architecture, Tasmanian provenance and exceptional craftsmanship.
A Legacy of World-Class Golf
Barnbougle’s journey began with the opening of its first course, The Dunes, on December 10, 2004. Despite its remote location, the course quickly garnered international acclaim, becoming the first Australian course to enter the World Top 100 rankings in 2005. In 2010, Barnbougle expanded with The Lost Farm, which also joined the prestigious rankings upon its debut. Together, the two courses have solidified Barnbougle’s status as an idealistic destination for golfers worldwide.
“As a family-owned business, we’re incredibly proud of Barnbougle’s journey from non-arable dunes on a beef and potato farm to a bucket list golf destination,” said Richard Sattler, owner and founder of Barnbougle.
'Such a milestone should be celebrated. Given fine whisky, like great links, benefits from exceptional craftsmanship and matures with age, our partnership with Hellyers Road was a natural alignment. We couldn’t think of a better way to toast the anniversary of Barnbougle than with a fellow 20-year-old Tasmanian.’ -Sattler.
Barnbougle’s commitment to quality and tradition is mirrored by Hellyers Road Distillery, Tasmania’s largest distiller of single malt whisky. The partnership celebrates shared values of exceptional craftsmanship, local heritage, and attention to detail. “The alignment between fine whisky and great links golf is natural—both benefit from exceptional craftsmanship and maturation over time,” said Sattler.
Filled into barrel in 2004, this Single Malt was matured in ex-Bourbon American Oak for 18 years. In 2022 it was transferred into a single French Oak cask previously used to age Fortified Tasmanian Ruby Pinot.
Official Tasting Notes:
NOSE: Cranberries, candied orange, shortbread and spice. Opens with the scent of rich Christmas pudding drizzled with brandy sauce. Candied orange adds a bright citrus note, while warming spices of nutmeg and clove add depth and complexity. Honeyed hazelnuts and walnut skin bring a touch of earthy sweetness, complemented by the comforting scent of buttery shortbread.
PALATE: Figs, raisins, baking spices, creaminess. On the palate, the single malt delivers a rich tapestry of dark fruits—juicy, ripe figs, plump raisins and sweet apricots, enveloped in a velvety custard. The sweetness is balanced by a warm medley of baking spices, adding complexity and depth. The mouthfeel is full and luxurious, coating the palate with its opulence with a lingering wine like texture.
FINISH: Long, spicy and comforting.
“The fact that this whisky was first filled into cask the year Barnbougle was founded is fortuitous and makes for a very special collaboration. It’s very rare to have an Australian single malt whiskey of this age custom bottled and labeled. Perhaps so rare it has never been done to this level before in Australia,” said Derek Charge, CEO of Hellyers Road Distillery. “Its connection to Barnbougle’s founding year and its rare maturation process make it an extraordinary release.”
The Barnbougle x Hellyers Road Anniversary 20-Year-Old Single Malt is limited to one cask and just 405 bottles. Each bottle retails for $1,500 per bottle. Each bottle is individually numbered and presented in a handcrafted Tasmanian Oak box, sealed with cork and wax.
