You heard right - the only question is are you ready for it?
Buffalo Trace, the American Bourbon giant is working on a new Weller label - as if Weller wasn't already extremely popular - this time, the Daniel Weller Emmer Wheat Recipe.
From the labels revealed so far, we're first and foremost told that this will be a 94 Proof Bourbon (47% ABV), so not all that high - comparable to the CYPB expression which comes in at 95 Proof (47.5% ABV), so somewhere in the middle of the Weller range. It's also aged for at least 4 years.
Then we're told the new expression's provenance:
Rediscover the Past
In 1794 Daniel Weller, the grandfather of William Larue Weller, left Maryland and made the long voyage down the Ohio River. Daniel traveled with his wife and children, ultimately settling in Kentucky where he would continue the family tradition of distilling.
Our Emmer Wheat Recipe is inspired by Daniel and his pioneering spirit. Rarely seen in modern day stills, Emmer Wheat is an ancient Egyptian grain that was used in bread & beer.
This bottle is a tribute to Daniel, the trail blazer of the Weller family.
From the back label immediately we're showed why the new Daniel Weller expression is set apart from the Weller range - it won't be the standard Buffalo Trace Wheated Bourbon Mash Bill that we're used to here. Instead, we're treated to what appears to be a revival of a heritage Egyptian grain.
Through some agricultural digging, we've found that Emmer was one of the first domesticated crops in the Eastern Mediterranean region, that became widely popular (as the label mentions, was used for bread and beer), but is now a crop that is only found in the wild in the mountainous regions of Europe and Asia. It is nonetheless still popularly used in Italy for high end bread.
It is apparently a really sturdy crop that produces good yield despite poor soil qualities, and is regarded as the primary reason ancient Egyptian widely consumed bread.
So, back to the real question, are you ready to go on another wild hunt for the new Daniel Weller Emmer Wheat Recipe?
