Bruichladdich’s Yellow Submarine Returns For Distillery's 25th Anniversary

Bruichladdich is celebrating its 25th anniversary by bringing back its legendary "Yellow Submarine" whisky.

The new limited-edition Yellow Submarine III will follow Whisky of Mass Distinction: Yellow Submarine (2005) and Yellow Submarine II: The Legend Resurfaces (2018).

Yellow Submarine III is unpeated and distilled from 100% Scottish barley, using the Appaloosa varietal grown on the mainland. Matured entirely on Islay for 14 years, the whisky follows a recipe inspired by the original 2005 release: a blend of 25% first-fill Bourbon barrels and 75% first- and second-fill French red wine casks.

Master blender Adam Hannett said that the expression's nose offers honeyed oats, buttery shortbread, then this ripple of nutmeg, hazelnut and gentle ginger heat.

On the palate, it is said to be smooth and present orange zest, honeysuckle, apple and pear, before z crème brûlée richness and a touch of sea salt emerge.

It honors the distillery’s early history, and especially a rather bizarre 2005 event when a real Ministry of Defence submersible was found off Islay, a moment still marked by an on-site replica today.

But that wasn't even why the series was created. It was actually born from a mix-up in the early 2000s, when (unbelievably) US Military Intelligence mistakenly flagged Bruichladdich as a potential site for weapons of mass destruction!

Bottled at 54.2% ABV without chill filtration or added coloring, Yellow Submarine III has an MSRP of £100 (US$134). The limited edition is available starting today (1 June) via the distillery’s website and specialist retailers.
