Buffalo Trace New Daniel Weller Line To Explore Unique Wheat Varietals

Weeks ago, labels of the new Daniel Weller buzzed about, as potentially one of Bourbon's most exciting stories of the year.

At the time, the new Buffalo Trace label told us that this new edition would make use of an ancestral wheat known as Emmer Wheat, that originated in Egypt.

Now, Buffalo Trace has finally released the full details of the new Daniel Weller line - "an experimental line exploring the impact of different strains of wheat on its stories bourbons".

This exciting development seems to indicate that Buffalo Trace will be using its wheated mashbill and swapping out the wheat components for various varietals of wheat to create unique expressions under the Daniel Weller line - we told you it was going to be one of the biggest hits of the year!

Also what is really surprising as we get a first look at this new series is the design of the bottle, which is unlike anything of Buffalo Trace's portfolio today, and definitely breaks with the Weller line-up - experimental indeed!

Each bottle comes with a compass stopper that once opened, underneath the stopper, you can find the coordinates pinpointing the location of Daniel's farm near Botland, Kentucky.

"This exciting extension of the original wheated bourbon brand demonstrates Buffalo Trace Distillery’s excellence in innovation while honoring a forefather of American whiskey, Daniel Weller – grandfather to William Larue Weller – and the family distilling traditions he passed down to the generations of whiskey pioneers that followed him."

Nonetheless we'll have to first be content with the inaugural release of the Daniel Weller - Emmer Wheat, which is aged for almost 12 years, bottled at 94 proof, with tasting notes below.

Official Tasting Note

Aroma

Fresh and nutty, with notes of orange zest, hazelnut, cinnamon and caramel.

Taste

Well-rounded blend of bold oak, sweet honey and orchard fruits.

Finish

Complex oak-forward, complemented by baking spice and leather notes.

We're also told that the new Daniel Weller experimental line will be an annual release every other year, when each experiment it deemed ready for bottling.

The new Daniel Weller Emmer Wheat will be rolled out across US in June 2023, at an MSRP of US$499.99.
