Each year, avid Chichibu collectors await one of the most sought after country editions - the Paris Edition!
Every year's Paris Edition Chichibu expression is specially constructed for La Maison du Whisky by Chichibu Distillery founder Ichiro Akuto, with the first edition being inaugurated in 2018.
The Chichibu Paris Edition 2024 pays tribute to some of the most recognisible landmarks across Paris and Tokyo, with six monuments selected, each produced on traditional Japanese washi paper labels, for a total of 6 different label versions for the same expression.
The monuments selected are the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe and the Notre-Dame Cathedral for Paris, and for Tokyo, they are the Tokyo Tower, Meiji Jingu Gate and Tokyo Imperial Palace.
The Chichibu Paris Edition 2024 is a small batch of 15 casks - 12 Bourbon barrels, 2 Chibidaru Quarter Casks, and 1 Red Wine cask - which averages 6-7 years old. La Maison du Whisky tells us that the 2024 Edition has an ever more subtle peat that sets the tone for a tasting that is complex and with breadth, that keeps evolving and increasing.
The expression is bottled at 50.5% ABV, with a total of 2,484 bottles.
Official Tasting Notes
Colour: Bright Gold
Aroma: Lively, unctuous. On the first nose, gentle peat appears opposite juicy aromas of lemon, menthol and vanilla. Allowed to breathe, tropical fruit (banana, pineapple) takes centre stage. Herbal infusions (vervain, bay leaf) then refresh the aroma palette.
Taste: Taut, distinguished. The herbaceous attack (dried grass, cut hay) also shows pepper. Damp earth flavours lay the foundation for the flavour palette. The tasting then continues with delicious notes of toast and nuts (chestnut, date).
Finish: Long, full. Coconut milk at first spreads across the taste buds. Continuing on, candied pear and rosemary form a particularly well-balanced sequence. The invigorating finish is spicy (cardamom, clove, fresh ginger).
LMDW has also put together a brief history of the various monuments selected.
