Glendronach is celebrating its 200th anniversary with the unveiling of its oldest whisky to date: A 56 year old single malt retailing for £35,000 (US$46,760).
Distilled in September 1968, the whisky was laid down in three oloroso Sherry butts from the historic bodegas of Jerez and aged in the distillery's traditional dunnage warehouses. It was then transferred into three Spanish oak Pedro Ximenez hogsheads in 2014.
Bottled at 44.9% ABV, the whisky is said to feature notes of dark fruits, dark cacao, caramelised dates, oud wood, and blackberry, with a palate of black cherry, tonka bean, amber-raisin, dark chocolate, and mandarin.
The expression is limited to 200 hand-numbered Glencairn crystal decanters, which lay within a hand-carved bespoke American Black Walnut cabinet lined with an interior of rare quilted maple.
Made by John Galvin, each presentation box is composed of 148 individual elements and required more than 80 hours of craftsmanship, with each box said to serve as a ‘physical tribute to the passage of time’.
The expression will be released in small, exclusive batches from the end of April.
