Famed Tennessee whiskey brand Jack Daniel's is cueing up for the launch of its first ever whiskey expression aged exclusively in toasted barrels.
The new offering, the Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Heritage Barrel Whiskey, will be aged for a minimum of seven years in heavily toasted casks, before being bottled at 100 proof. According to the brand, one can expect notes of vanilla, marshmallow and toffee. As per Jack Daniel's typical mashbill, it is also expected to have a classic 80% corn, 12% malted barley and 8% rye.

This is Jack Daniel's first venture into whiskey aged solely in toasted barrels. Previously, they've only explored the toasting trend through cask finishes. Their Distillery Series releases #008, #009, and #010 each used a different type of toasted wood for finishing, including pecan chips and various oaks.
The modern barrel-toasting technique involves heating barrels at low temperatures for minutes or even hours, which is believed to enhance the oak and vanilla flavors. Toasting is a separate step from the legally required charring process for bourbon. Charring uses high-temperature flames for only a few seconds, while toasting uses lower heat over a much longer period.
