“At Jack Daniel’s, we take pride in controlling every aspect of the whiskey making process, from cultivating our own yeast to crafting our own barrels. Having the Jack Daniel Cooperage gives us an unmatched ability to experiment with specifications to see how different materials and techniques can impart new flavors and aromas,
These two barrel-finished rye whiskeys are a result of that experimentation process, and we think they stand out as truly unique offerings that reflect the spirit of craft and innovation we have here at the Jack Daniel Distillery.”
- Chris Fletcher, Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller
The #8 Toasted Maple Barrel Rye is a Straight Tennessee Rye that was filled into barrels in March 2017 and subsequently given a finish in high-toast, no-char maple barrels (barrels made of maple wood) in September 2021. It is bottled at 50.5% ABV and is said to offer "an aroma of butterscotch and honey and notes of butterscotch, maple, raisins, and pralines with a finish reminiscent of a toasted marshmallow".
The #9 Toasted Barrel Finished Rye is also a Straight Tennessee Rye that was filled into barrels in 2014 and later transferred to a high-toast, no-char oak barrel for finishing in October 2019. It is bottled at 50.5% ABV and has "notes of caramel and toasted oak along with rye spice, dark chocolate, and molasses".
Both bottlings are now available in the White Rabbit Bottle Shop at the distillery for US$42 per 375ml bottle (note that this is smaller than the standard Jack Daniel's 750ml bottles).
Previous releases in this experimental series includes finishings using Jamaican allspice wood, high angel share barrels, as well as immersing charred hickory staves into oak barrels for aging.
