El Tesoro Finishes Anejo Tequila In Yamazaki Whisky Casks In New Mundial Release

El Tesoro Tequila has revealed the newest addition to its Mundial Collection: a limited-edition añejo finished in casks from Japan's famed Yamazaki distillery.

The El Tesoro Mundial: Yamazaki Edition, comes as a collaboration between El Tesoro’s former and newly appointed master distillers Carlos and Jenny Camarena, and the House of Suntory’s fifth-generation chief blender Shinji Fukuyo.

The release also marks a departure from the west, with previous cask-finished offerings having used barrels from distilleries like Laphroaig, Knob Creek, and Basil Hayden.

After being filled with sherry and wine, the casks previously held Yamazaki's 12 year old expression before being used to age the tequila for another year.

El Tesoro has said that the expression is expected to provide aromas of agave, dried fruit, honey and florals followed by a dense palate brimming with almonds, warm spices and toasted coffee beans.

The Yamazaki Edition also marks the first release from El Tesoro with Jenny Camarena’s master distiller. Appointed in April, she belongs to the the Camarena family; one of the most prolific dynasties in additive-free distillation, responsible for stewarding myriad fan favorites, including Tapatio, G4 and Tequila Ocho.

Bottled at 42% ABV, the limited release rolls out this month at an MSRP of USD$199. However, the combined star power of both brands might very well guarantee a rapid sell-out.
