Johnnie Walker's Debuts World’s Lightest Whisky Bottle

After five years of innovation, Diageo-owned Johnnie Walker has unveiled the lightest glass whisky bottle in the world.

The 700ml limited edition Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ultra was revealed at the London Design Festival on September 14 2024. The revolutionary new bottle was said to have been created by adopting a test-and-learn model which involved hand-blowing the glass in a teardrop shape.

The bottle weighs only 180g without its closure, topping the previous holder of the title by 118g. With the standard blue label bottle coming in at 850g, the new weight is a staggering reduction.

Johnnie Walker's Master Blender Dr. Emma Walker created the new expression with a blend of whisky from distilleries such as Oban, Brora, and Royal Lochnagar. It is also said that there is a variety of ‘ghost whiskies’ from defunct distilleries thrown into the mix.

While the technology is not yet available to manufacture and employ the new bottles on a large scale, the brand offers a royalty-free licence of the patent to anyone in the world who wishes to share the innovation.

This isn't the first time Johnnie Walker's been finding new ways to innovate its bottles either. Earlier this year, Johnnie Walker introduced its first generative AI-powered personalised bottle experience in Edinburgh.

This time around, the brand has also partnered with designers Marshmallow Laser Feast to create a Landmark Project installation at the Old Selfridges Hotel in Marylebone. The installation aims to celebrate the design elements of Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ultra.

Limited to just 888 bottles, the bottles will be released for sale next year in selected markets worldwide for £1,000.
