Kanosuke Distillery Exclusive #003 Red Wine Cask Unpeated Malt

What you need to know:

  • Japanese craft distillery Kanosuke's third edition distillery exclusive #003 will see imported non-peated malt that was distilled in 2018 aged in recharred casks for one year, followed by maturation in red wine barrels from France's beloved Bordeaux region for another 3 years, before being bottled in 2022, making this a neat little just under 4 year old single malt from the up and coming craft distillery.
  • This will retail at 3,960 JPY or 32 USD. Take note that it is bottled at 57% ABV and is only 200ml in size. This was distributed by the distillery via lottery.
  • After Kanosuke's big win with their Distillery Exclusive #001 W-IPA Cask Finish at the World Whiskies Awards where it picked up "Best Japan Single Malt NAS", you can expect these to sell like hot cakes.
  • If you live in Japan (because you need a local Japanese address to take part in their lotteries), you should still generally try and take part for Kanosuke's distillery exclusives. They are actually priced pretty affordably and showcase some of the more interesting cask finish experiments that the distillery does.

"For this distillery limited bottle, the undiluted whisky that had been aged in Recharred Cask for one year was replaced with red wine barrels from the Bordeaux region of France, and aged for nearly three years. The characteristic sweetness of Recharred Cask and the flavor derived from red wine are beautifully combined to create a unique taste."

Our Take

I suppose after Kanosuke's big win with their Distillery Exclusive #001 W-IPA Cask Finish at the World Whiskies Awards where it picked up "Best Japan Single Malt NAS", you can expect these to sell like hot cakes.

From what we've heard, lottery applications have skyrocketed. They were already pretty high before, but is now off the charts.

If you live in Japan (because you need a local Japanese address to take part in their lotteries), you should still generally try and take part for Kanosuke's distillery exclusives. They are actually priced pretty affordably and showcase some of the more interesting cask finish experiments that the distillery does.
