Nestled in the subtropical heart of Yilan County, Taiwan, Kavalan Distillery has been making waves in the whisky world since 2005. Renowned for its innovative approach to whisky-making and its dedication to crafting exceptional spirits, Kavalan has garnered numerous prestigious awards and accolades. And now, they're dropping a new offering they call a tribute to their birthplace of Yilan.

The new whisky is exclusively for export, called LÁN Whisky, bottled at 43% ABV in a standard 700ml bottle. "LÁN" or 蘭 is the Traditional Chinese word for "orchid," a flower that holds significant meaning for both Kavalan and Yilan County. In fact, the character for "蘭" appears in both names, making it a fitting symbol for this special expression.

Attendees at Hong Kong Whisky Live and the Korea Bar and Spirits Show were among the lucky few to get a first taste of LÁN Whisky. Following its Asian debut, LÁN will make its European entrance at Whisky Live Paris later this month.

The initial launch of LÁN Whisky will include markets across the EU, Cambodia, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Canada. But don't worry if you're not in one of those regions, a second wave will soon bring LÁN to all other countries where Kavalan is exported.

One of the secrets behind LÁN Whisky's distinctive flavour profile is Kavalan's pioneering STR (shaving, toasting, and recharring) technique. This innovative process allows for deeper penetration into the oak casks, creating a richer, more complex spirit within a shorter period of maturation. In fact, Kavalan's Solist Vinho Barrique, which also utilises the STR technique, was crowned "World's Best Single Malt" at the World Whiskies Awards in 2015.

Interestingly, since 1988, the King Car Group, Kavalan's parent company, has been a leader in orchid research, cultivating new varieties and contributing to the preservation of these delicate flowers. This has inspired the creation of LÁN Whisky.

Matured in a combination of bourbon barrels and port casks, LÁN Whisky is further enriched by Kavalan's STR technique, resulting in a spirit with a caramelised fruity sweetness that's sure to delight the palate.
