Lagavulin has bottled their oldest single cask bottling from a Sherry cask under their Cask of Distinction banner - a 30 Year Old Lagavulin Single Malt Single Cask Scotch.
The whisky was distilled in 1991 and subsequently fully matured in a Sherry cask, specifically First Fill PX / Oloroso Seasoned European Oak Butt, Cask No. #5403, for 30 years before its selection by Diageo's Casks of Distinction Program's Master Blenders Dr. Craig WIlson, Dr. Emma Walker, Maureen Robinson and Dr. Jim Beveridge for bottling in 2022. With a total outturn of 318 bottles, it was bottled at cask strength of 44.3% ABV. The bottling will retail at 3,490 EUR or 3,570 USD.
The Cask of Distinction bottling was commissioned jointly by Hong Kong's Whiskey Fellows and House Welley Whiskey Bar, as well as the founding members of indie bottler Wu Dram Clan and Christoph Kirsch of Kirsch Import.

"Lagavulin fans can expect an incredible single malt - lush in its natural colouring, with a complex, engaging profile of berry fruit, bacon and smoke that unfolds to be creamy, bold and complex. After 30 years in the first fill Pedro Ximénez/Oloroso Seasoned European Oak Butt #5403, the alcohol meter still measures 44.3 volume percent."
Official Tasting Notes
Aroma
Dark fruit with wonderfully subtle smoky notes that Lagavulin develops as it ages.
Taste
Fresh fruit, especially berries, and a little bacon, which (typical of old whiskeys) goes straight into a mineral cellar note. The whiskey unfolds, becomes creamy, powerful, sweet, smoky and layered.
Finish
Very long and with a powerful presence.
Kanpai!
