LVMH's New High End Tequila Volcan X.A Makes Its Debut

LVMH has been working on a new high end tequila codenamed "Project Blue" in collaboration with Juan Gallardo's Volcan, named after the Tequila Volcano where it is located, in Mexico's Jalisco.

Yes, Tequila Volcano is an actual volcano.

The name of the new joint project was revealed when new bottles began making its way around some of the most renowned clubs - Volcan De Mi Tierra, or "Volcano Of My Land".

The new tequila employs the use of blending techniques to reflect its provenance as well as American and European oak cask aging to mature, round out and deepen its tequila's flavors.

“Volcan X.A is the result of several years of work and research in Volcan’s distillery. Some years ago, we built a new cellar, which is 8 meters deep and has 1.5m thick walls to protect our casks from the heat of Jalisco and allow gentle ageing in various types of oak barrels we had been experimenting on.

After many trials, we have been able to create the tequila we were aiming for: An ultra-smooth and aromatic expression with a long finish, and no additives.”

The existing range consists of a Blanco (Unaged), Reposado (Two Months Aged) and the more recently popular Cristalino (Charcoal Filtered), but now with LVMH, we'll get a taste of the the brand's top of the line X.A.

"Volcan X.A reveals a perfect balance of cooked agave, hints of spices and sweet aromas such as notes of vanilla, caramel and dried fruits. To be enjoyed neat or on the rocks."

The new X.A is a blend of Reposado, Anejo and Extra-Anejo to create a whole lot more in terms of complexity, which is then aged in American Oak "Grace Casks", resulting in a smooth, toasty and vanilla-heavy expression.

The casks used are lightly toasted virgin American Oak barrels originating from trees across different plots to give the final spirit a unique flavor profile, having taken a page from the winemaker's playbook. Together with the use of Agave grown on volcanic soil in both highlands and lowlands fields, Volcan's partnership with LVMH is looking to get in big on the Tequila game.
